At an elevation of 1,850m above sea level – nearly a mile high – the local herders have long produced abundant, thick wool, and have had a need for the insulation of wool carpets during the long cold winters. The old Hamadan carpets – from the early 1900’s – have a weft of wool, but the base is now predominantly cotton. Nevertheless, the traditional medallion motifs and patterns hand-knotted in indigo blue and madder red, are the same as they have been for centuries.
